BCCC CHANGES LIVES
HEATHER HAFER CLAUS
|
 |
|
“I’m proud to be
passing on the tradition
of musical excellence
that I received to the next
generation of singers.” |
From singer to director—the commitment of a
lifetime.
Little did the junior high Heather Hafer know how long and deep her
relationship with BCCC would grow.
“As a singing member for seven years, BCCC impacted my life in more
ways than I can mention. In fact, I attribute my knowledge of
musical theory solely to BCCC.” Her firm foundation from BCCC served
her well as a Music Education major at Susquehanna University, where
she graduated summa cum laude and was awarded the University’s
Outstanding Future Teacher Award.
“When I graduated from college and learned of the Training Chorus
opening, I applied for it even before applying for full-time
teaching jobs!” Now a general music teacher in the Exeter school
district, Heather Claus frequently thinks fondly of her early days
at BCCC, back where it all began.
EMMA JANE MAURER

|
“At
BCCC, it doesn’t
matter if you have a
different background,
or religion, or if you have
something wrong with you
like me. Singing with
them makes me forget
about my troubles.” |
Physical challenges put to rest at BCCC.
Chorister member Emma Jane Maurer learned very early that she’d have
some physical challenges to accept. She was born with hydrocephalus
(a condition where fluid builds in the brain), plus a large cyst—and
doctors believe she suffered a stroke even before her birth. The
results of which sometimes stand in the way of Emma doing all the
things her friends can do.
“But the biggest challenge,” says Emma, “is to learn to accept who I
am and feel good about myself and not compare myself to others.”
BCCC is a place that helps her do just that. “The group likes you
for who you are,” Emma says. “We work really hard, and it gives me a
good feeling when we perform. When we get a standing ovation, I feel
like I won a medal and have been crowned the champion.”
Emma believes BCCC has taught her some valuable life lessons. “To
never give up. That if you have determination and goals, you will
succeed.” The most important lesson? “No matter what other people
think, you can do whatever you want to do.”
